Concept

The pawn is a metaphor for how we navigate the systems we are embedded in. Not the chess pawn, but the piece as a way to interact with the rules of a game that nobody knows entirely, and which is in a constant process of expansion and transformation.

The board itself is nobody's design. Rules produce incentives, people adapt to those incentives, and this adaptation accumulates until the rules no longer mean what they meant. Without anyone having amended them. The ground you stand on was laid by people responding to conditions that no longer exist, and your movement across it changes what it will be for those who come next.

The artworks reflect this dynamic: boards that extend toward the horizon and blend into nature; rule-based tiling that meets organic shapes in a constant, delicate negotiation.

From another angle, the artifacts we create carry our agency, projecting it across the board. Simple everyday objects or complex technology, each in its own way.

Following this motif, some illustrations depict people in ordinary situations with a pawn casually placed beside them. Close enough to be a companion, near enough to be watching. Whether it plays the role of assistant or antagonist is a question I leave open. Not as a grim observation, but as necessary knowledge in the search for a world where humanity may flourish and express its full potential.

Process

This collection is medium-agnostic by definition. The aim is not to bind the subject to a single technique, but to let the pawns and their surrounding symbolism move off the canvas and into people’s lives. The pawns, the palm trees, the board itself function as avatars for self-reflection and contemplation.

On this site you will encounter oils, acrylics, watercolors, murals made with two-component ship paint, pen and pencil sketches, clay, and a virtual engine—the first of several planned interactive experiences.

Jean draws directly with a Fude pen, so each line is a permanent mark on the finished work. The approach echoes Zen practices of meditation and flow: when no mark can be erased, the stakes rise and attention shifts to a different frequency. Lately, for the sake of portability, he has worked primarily with Fude pen and watercolor.

The website itself grew out of a project first conceived for live exhibitions. A web version was developed for projection so that anyone, anywhere, could visit it. It is a WebGPU project: the page generates itself on every visit from C++ and WGSL alone. There are no imported 3D models and nothing is pre-drawn; the landscape is procedurally generated end to end. Every aesthetic decision was made in terms of reproducible patterns designed to resonate with the paintings. Significant work also went into performance so that any device capable of running WebGPU can open the page.

Aesthetically, Jean draws from a wide range of references—film directors, painters, and others. Among them are Denis Villeneuve, Refik Anadol, KAWS, and Kim Jung Gi. Philosophically he works from complexity science, mathematics, literature, and history. His main lines of thought come from long study of the history of mathematics, the history of written language, and the history of art. Taken together, these fields support a thesis about communication, artifacts, and technology that drives the larger project.

Through the work he wants to contribute to conversations about how people adapt to rapid environmental change, how technology reshapes social dynamics, and how a more harmonious society might be built out of a better understanding of human relations.

Bio

Jean has drawn since roughly the same age he learned to read, and he has always maintained a strong interest in artistic expression, particularly visual art and music. Mostly self-taught, he did not initially see an artistic career as viable and, under the pressure of circumstances, studied industrial engineering. Years later he took a job as a DJ on a cruise ship, met his girlfriend (now his wife), and his life took a lasting detour.

During the COVID-19 pandemic he was visiting her in the Philippines and became stranded for more than a year. In that period he pivoted from music production toward programming and conceptualized a system that mapped musical input to 3D visuals. The sketches he used as templates for that system became the seed of the present collection.

Even earlier, Jean had drawn pawns on vast landscapes as a private pastime. The drawings produced a contemplative feeling and raised recurring questions: What move is worth making? What is the game worth playing? Am I making my own moves, or am I someone else’s pawn? The motif returned intermittently until it became the central theme of the work.

Since the end of the pandemic he has developed both the concept and the techniques present in the artworks on this site. He has exhibited in São Paulo, Brazil, with further presentations planned for Latin America and Europe.
